Tank

We will be using this tank car throughout our inspection. Along with defective components and other pieces of equipment we will instruct you on how to begin and follow through with a completely thorough tank car inspection.

By the time you complete this inspection program you will be able to:

  • identify all tank car types
  • determine their general condition
  • identify defective components
  • have them corrected when necessary

The most effective way to begin a tank car inspection is to begin on one end. On tank cars these ends are identified as "A" or "B" ends. The "B" end or brake end is pictured here.

Left and right-hand positions on a tank car are determined while facing the "B" or brake end.

This method is used throughout the industry as the standard way in which to identify where defective components are located and to properly report them on an inspection form.

The "B" end of the tank car which our inspector is looking at is shown at the bottom in this illustration.
