Individuals attending this course will be competent at the Hazardous Materials First Responder - Awareness Level. The course meets the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.120 (OSHA), Awareness-Level and NFPA 472.

The training of the first responders at the Awareness Level is based on how to recognize a potential hazardous material incident and in a defensive mode to keep the incident from escalating if at all possible. They will be familiarized with methods needed to call for assistance, shelter in place or evacuate.

After attending the course, a student should be able to first analyze the incident and then take appropriate steps to call for assistance, shelter in place, or evacuate.

In order to ensure the program has met its goal and the students are fully qualified as a Awareness Level I Responder, all students will be given a test. Minimum written test scores are 70%. Certificates will be issued to all students meeting this criteria.
